Stealing Sound Clips

Some people believe that stealing sound clips, especially for website use, is permissible as long as the clip is under 30 seconds. That is not true. Sound clips are copyright protected like all other works of art; yet they are illegally used on websites every day. Sound clips are owned by the person or company that created them, and everyone is under legal obligation to obtain permission from the clip owner before using them for any purpose. It does not matter if the sound clip was created by a professional performing company or an individual. Permission to use the sound clips is still needed. Web licensing is a fairly new concept but one that is going to be as vigorously enforced as other licenses.

Fast Facts

    • A copyright only applies to the specific work and not to pre-existing material
