The growth of e-commerce online has led to an increase in the use of electronic contracts with digital or electronic signatures. Electronic contracts may be used to subscribe to premium online services or when downloading software or using social networking websites. Electronic contracts called click through agreements are common online. Users must agree to the terms of click through agreements before using certain software or online services. Instead of handwritten signatures, electronic contracts such as click through agreements may require users to check or click on a box that says "OK" or "I Agree" or similar language. Clicking the agreement box signifies that a user agrees to the terms of the electronic agreement. Electronic contracts may also be signed using a digital representation of a handwritten signature, and are often digitally encrypted to protect the document. A wide variety of legal contracts are routinely electronically signed, and United States Federal laws such as the E-Sign Act specify that electronically signed contacts are legally valid.
