Online Copyrights

Online copyrights are frequently obtained for unique creative works that appear online. The Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works states that anything created after April 1, 1989 is protected and copyrighted, regardless of whether a copyright notice is present, however many still wish to obtain an official copyright for extra security and peace of mind. An official copyright can be registered with the United States Copyright Office, though the process can take months to complete and applicants must pay a fee. Many web users instead choose to use Creative Commons for online copyrights, especially when they want a less restrictive copyright that allows more freedom in sharing while still protecting creative works. Creative Commons offers free copyright licenses for creative work, and licenses may specify how a work may be used. Some Creative Commons licenses allow users to remix copyrighted works to create unique derivative works, while other licenses allow only verbatim copies with proper attribution.
