Online Copyright Law

Online copyright law is still a new field, and the legal issues surrounding online copyrights have yet to be sufficiently settled. Because the Internet continues to grow and change, online copyright law is also an ever evolving concept that is frequently modified as new online issues arise. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA, is generally considered to be one of the most important developments relating to online copyright law. The DMCA was passed as an official federal law in 1998 in response to treaty agreements with the World Intellectual Property Organization. One particularly notable provision in the DMCA is the Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act or OCILLA, which shields Internet Service Providers from liability due to copyright infringement on the part of those who use their services. The OCILLA represents a major victory for Internet service providers and telecom groups, who had previously been under threat by copyright interests who attempted to use their power to force ISPs to be held liable for the actions of everyone who might use their Internet services.
