Security is one of the most important factors relating to Internet usage. Security is is a common concern for anyone using the Internet, from individuals to corporations to government bodies. Employers often limit or restrict employee's Internet usage due to security concerns. Data loss or data theft is a risk for any business using the Internet General recommendations and guidelines for Internet usage suggest the use of up to date anti-virus programs to protect against online threats. Firewalls are also commonly used to provide security. Any computer that is connected to the Internet has a risk of being compromised, damaged, or destroyed by malicious viruses or computer hackers. Identity theft is another common security concern, and encryption techniques are often used to protect sensitive information that is transmitted over the Internet. Though a host of federal, state and local laws as well as international treaties and regulations criminalize many cyber crimes, online threats remain a reality.
