Internet Usage Policy

Many companies have employee Internet usage policies which regulate and/or restrict how their employees use the Internet while on the job. An Internet usage policy may dictate the particular online activities that are allowed and disallowed, and may be as detailed as employers wish. Certain online activities such as buying or selling items online, downloading, gambling, or playing games may be addressed in an Internet usage policy. Policies may also include topics such as email etiquette and the handling of sensitive proprietary information. Employers often have new employees sign an Internet usage policy before beginning work, and snooping or tracking programs may be used in order to monitor Internet usage. System administrators may also routinely view employees Internet usage history to ensure that rules are being followed. An employee who violates their company's Internet usage policy may be punished or fired. Internet usage policy agreements should be thoroughly read and employees should keep a copy of the policy in case of future disputes.
