Internet Usage Policies

Many businesses implement specific Internet usage policies in order to protect themselves from data loss, security breaches, and lost time due to excessive personal Internet use by employees. It is recommended that Internet usage policies be in writing, clearly stating the rules and regulations regarding Internet usage by employees while on the job. In the case of a dispute, having a written company policy regarding Internet usage will protect business owners as well as employees. Both employers and employees should sign the company computing policy, and copies should be kept for reference. Some employers may choose to use tracking programs to monitor employee's Internet usage to make sure that their workers are complying with company policy. Tracking programs can record keystrokes and take snapshots of a user's online activity, often without the user knowing that it is occurring. In the past, courts have generally allowed employers to use tracking programs and other methods to control and monitor what occurs on company computers.
