Internet usage in the workplace is often limited and/or monitored by employers. Some employers may limit their employee's Internet usage in order to reduce the amount of time employees spend on non-work related tasks. Sending personal emails, browsing the web, or chatting online often leads to decreased productivity, and is therefore restricted by some employers. Employers may also restrict Internet usage in the workplace in order to guard against other risks, such as viruses or data loss. Additionally, employers may be held liable for illegal content viewed or downloaded by employees, such as copyrighted material or illegal pornography. Employers may use firewalls or other blocking programs to control their employee's Internet usage. Monitoring programs are also sometimes used to track employees Internet usage. Employees should be made aware of the rules and regulations regarding Internet usage in the workplace, and employers should inform all employees of any monitoring programs used.
