Internet Usage At Work

Internet usage at work is often monitored or restricted by employers. While many employers feel comfortable with allowing their workers a reasonable amount of freedom regarding Internet usage, other employers choose to take a toucher approach, in some instances blocking access to the Internet altogether. The two most important reasons that many employers choose to restrict Internet usage at work are to prevent loss of time and productivity, and to minimize risk. Some employers may fear that allowing their employees unrestricted access to the Internet at work will lead them to spend too much of the company's time on personal business. Web surfing, online shopping, emailing and instant messaging are common distractions for those with access to the Internet while at work, and these distractions could negatively affect job performance. Also, unrestricted access to the Internet could allow company computers to be infected with computer viruses, which can be a financial burden as well as a security risk.
