Internet And Intellectual Property

Trademark and copyright violations on the Internet and intellectual property issues are among the most debated issues in regard to online activity in the 21st century. Internet users desiring more freedom in their online activity have repeatedly clashed with corporations and other organizations who have used their power and influence to enact laws and regulations that restrict or otherwise regulate online activity. The vast amounts of information available on the Internet, much of which is copyrighted, have created a host of new legal problems relating to the Internet and intellectual property. The federal Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA, has been the cause of much debate; specifically, the DMCA provisions regarding access control technologies that inhibit and limit how digital content can be used have been criticized by opponents such as the Free Software Foundation and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. An often stated argument is that access control technologies are anti-competitive and existing laws should not cover these controversial new technologies.
