Employee Internet Usage

Companies regularly have specific policies regarding employee Internet usage while on the job. These policies often differ depending on the company. Some businesses may have strict rules that limit or restrict employee Internet usage, while other businesses may allow their employees the freedom to regulate their own behavior and activities online. Employee Internet usage is often monitored or tracked by employers in order to ensure that their employees are following the rules, and also to guard against the many risks associated with employee Internet use. Lost time, computer viruses, system crashes, data loss and data theft are all common risks for businesses whose employees access the Internet on work computers. Employees may be reprimanded or even fired for violating their company's Internet usage policies, and any websites visited or emails sent from company computers are not necessarily private and may be viewed by supervisors or system administrators. Laws generally support an employer's right to monitor and track employee Internet usage.
