Electronic Signature

An electronic signature is an electronic mark or process which signifies that a person adopts the contents of a message or agrees to the terms of a contract. An electronic signature can be captured using an electronic signature pad. In this case, a person signs the digital pad, and a copy of their handwritten signature is digitally captured. Electronic signatures may also be image files attached to the end of an email or other piece of digital correspondence. Yet another type of electronic signature requires no image or digital capture of a signature, instead employing a button that is clicked or a box that is checked to signify agreement. Software usage agreements regularly use these type of electronic signatures. Users simply click a button with their mouse which says "I agree," "OK," or similar language. Digital technology has reduces the need for paper documents, leading to a rise in the use of digital signatures. Because of this, Federal laws have been created which give validity to documents or contracts signed with an electronic signature, giving them the same legal validity as handwritten signatures.
