Copyright Laws On The Internet

Copyright laws on the Internet can often be vague and confusing due to the massive amount and variety of information available online. A common misconception regarding Internet copyright laws is that if there is no visible copyright notice, then there is no copyright. In reality, a copyright is usually implied for original work, unless the work is old enough to be classified as being in the public domain. The Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, an international copyright agreement initially accepted in 1886, was implemented in the United States in 1989. The Berne copyright convention states that in the United States, anything originally created after April 1, 1989 is protected and copyrighted, regardless of whether a copyright notice is present. Laws regarding "fair use" allow others to sample and quote copyrighted work with proper attribution; fair use laws allow for creative works of parody, commentary, or reporting using copyrighted sources.

Fast Facts

  • Only 11% of teenagers in a 2008 survey said they understood the laws regarding downloading copyrighted content "very well."
