Many web users use Creative Commons copyrights to specify how their content can be used. Creative Commons copyrights may allow use for noncommercial purposes, or with proper attribution. Generally, the best way to ensure against a copyright or trademark violation is to contact the copyright or trademark holder personally. Failure to abide by copyright law and Internet regulations regarding reproduction and distribution of another person's intellectual property online could result in legal action. In some cases, such as unlawfully distributing copyrighted songs in mp3 form, monetary penalties may be assessed for each copyright violation. In recent years, record labels and other copyright holders have won large monetary judgments in copyright violation cases.
