Works published in other countries are protected in the United States as though the works were published within the U.S. In the USA and EU the copyright protection typically lasts for 70 years after the death of the author/creator. In many other countries, the copyright protection lasts for over 50 years of the author/creator life.

A huge judgment against Microsoft was decided by a federal jury. The amount of 1.5 billion dollars was awarded to Alcatel_Lucent for patent-infringement related to the conversion of audio into MP3 files for PCs. The Patent Infringement Lawyers for the telecom equipment maker called it one of the largest judgements ever. Microsoft’s Patent Lawyers believe the verdict is unsupported by the facts. They believe that the technology was properly licensed from Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a German research company, for $16 million.
